Everything You Need to Know About IELTS

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is among the most well-known English proficiency examinations. It's meant for non-native speakers of English and assesses your ability to utilize English in real-life situations in four basic skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Each skill has a separate test, and there are two versions of the IELTS:

  • IELTS Academic: For university entry or professional programs.
  • IELTS General Training: For migration, work, or general life abroad.

IELTS is accepted in several English-speaking countries, including the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Many universities in the US and even universities in some non-English-speaking countries accept IELTS scores.

The test is marked on a Band 1 (non-user) to Band 9 (expert user) scale, and your overall band score is the average of your four skill scores.

IELTS vs. EIKEN vs. TOEFL: Which Test is Right for You?

Choosing the right English test can be tricky. Here's a quick comparison:

  • EIKEN: Japan-based practical everyday English test. Top level (EIKEN 1) is highly regarded in Japan but less commonly accepted abroad.
  • TOEFL: Academic English mainly, often required by US universities. Completely computerized.
  • IELTS: Well-rounded test for both academic and everyday English. Speaking test one-on-one, which most people find more natural than the TOEFL's recorded responses.

Is IELTS Right for You?

IELTS might be the perfect test for you if:

✅ You're studying, working, or migrating to countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or the US (to a lesser degree).

✅ You want a test that covers both academic and general English, with the flexibility to choose between paper-based or computer-based testing (speaking is always face-to-face).

✅ You prefer a more natural one-on-one speaking test, where you interact with an examiner directly instead of recording your responses.

How Long Does It Take to Prepare for the IELTS?

Your study duration depends on your starting level and target band. Here's a rough guide:

  • ⏳ 1-2 months: If you're already Band 6.5+ and aiming for Band 7-7.5.
  • ⏳ 3-6 months: If you're at Band 5-6 and aiming for Band 6.5-7.
  • ⏳ 6+ months: If you're below Band 5 and aiming for Band 6+.

It requires an average of 200-300 study hours to move up by one whole band score, depending on the manner in which you study and the quality of practice.
