IELTS Speaking: Giving Longer Answers Naturally

Tips on How to Provide Details and Avoid Short Answers

Perhaps one of the most challenging aspects of the IELTS Speaking test is answering in longer, more natural sentences instead of short, direct answers.

When the question is, "Do you like music?", replying with just "Yes, I do." will harm your score instead of helping it. You need to provide more details by adding explanations and examples.

Here's how you can do it effectively:

  1. Apply the "Why + Example" Technique
say why and give a reason

One effective way to lengthen your answer is to say why and give an example.

Question: Do you like music?

Short answer: Yes, I do. (Too brief!)

Better answer: Yes, I love music because it relaxes me. For example, after a long day of studying, I listen to jazz to unwind.

Why? – "It relaxes me."

Example? – "After a long day of studying, I listen to jazz."

  1. Use Comparisons

If you compare two things, your response becomes more descriptive.

Question: Do you prefer studying in the morning or at night?

Short answer: I prefer studying at night.

Better answer: I prefer studying at night because it is quieter and I concentrate better. In the morning, I generally feel sleepy, but in the night, I feel alert.

Comparison? – "Morning is sleepy, but night is better for concentration."

  1. Add Personal Stories
tell a personal anecdont

A short personal story can make your answer more interesting and real.

Question: Have you ever been to a concert?

Short answer: Yes, I have.

Better answer: Yes, I went to a Coldplay concert last year. It was wonderful because the lights and atmosphere were excellent. I remember singing along to every song with my friends—it was unforgettable!

Personal anecdote? – "I attended a Coldplay concert, and I can never forget it!"

  1. Apply the "Past-Present-Future" Technique
use the past present and future story telling

When discussing experiences, attempt to lengthen your answer by referring to:

• Past (What used to happen) • Present (What is happening presently) • Future (What will eventually happen)

Example: Do you enjoy traveling?

Short answer: Yes, I do.

Past? – "My family would take trips."

Past? – "My family would take trips."

Present? – "I travel abroad once a year."

Future? – "I want to travel to Europe."

  1. Use Adjectives & Details
use adjectives and details

Adding adjectives and little details makes your response sound more rich.

Question: What do you like to eat?

Short answer: I like sushi.

Better answer: I really like sushi, especially fresh salmon sashimi. The soft texture and rich flavor are my favorite. I visit a small sushi restaurant near my house often because their seafood is so fresh.

Adjectives? – "Fresh," "soft," "rich flavor"

Details? – "A small sushi restaurant near my house"

  1. Imagine You're Talking to a Friend
imagine you're talking to a friend

In case you're nervous, try to imagine the examiner is a friend of yours. This way, you will be more able to speak spontaneously and will not give automated replies.

Question: What do you do during weekends?

Automated answer: During weekends, I study, watch television, and sleep.

Natural answer: I unwind on the weekend. I love binge-watching on Netflix, mostly crime TV series. Over last weekend, I started watching a new show, and I got so addicted that I played five back-to-back episodes!

  1. The "Half and Half" Answer: Showing Both Sides
critical thinking both sides

One of the techniques for naturally extending your answer is by providing both sides of an argument or situation. That way, you're able to show you're a critical thinker, and critical thinking is a great skill to be able to demonstrate on the IELTS Speaking exam.

Question: Do you think it's necessary to have a hobby?

Short answer: Yes, I do.

Improved answer: Yes, I would say that it is very much important to have a hobby since it makes you feel calm and away from tension. For example, I paint during my free time, and indeed I feel very calm. However, hobbies can waste time, especially when you have lots of work to do. But as a rule, I do think that the pros outweigh the cons.

These strategies will help you to give more detailed, natural answers in the IELTS Speaking test. The secret is to practice and try to go on and elaborate your answers without overthinking. You will become more confident and ready to meet any question!
